Lighting your cigar

Posted by Matt Miles on

When you lite a cigar the primary objective is to NOT allow the flame to touch the tobacco. A match, lighter or torch can transfer the flavor of sulphur or butane to the cigar. An aficionado will suggest that you light a cedar stick and light your cigar with it. Cedar is a wood that is neutral, it does not impart it's own flavor into a cigar. This is why humidors are made of cedar. But you see torches used everyday to light cigars, why? If you use the heat of the flame, not the flame itself then you get the easiest way to light a cigar. Remember the most heat from the flame is just off the tip.
